Rose City to add KBA 41-inch Six-Color plus Coater

Folding carton maker awaits KBA 41-inch six-color plus coater for printing thick, rigid substrates with minimum curvature

(Left to right) Ben Smith, plant manager at Rose City’s Portland facility; and Randy Perkins, KBA district sales manager; discuss the many new features on the KBA Rapida 105 41-inch six-color sheetfed press plus coater being installed at the new facility in Gresham, Oregon.

To improve efficiency and to expand product offerings, Rose City Printing & Packaging, a producer of folding cartons, has ordered a KBA Rapida 105 six-color (41 inch) plus coater press with extended delivery for its Portland plant.

"Printing thick, rigid substrates presents a real challenge both to the press and its operators," explained Doug Gorman, printing manager. "It's crucial to have smooth sheet travel with minimum curvature when printing heavy board, corrugated or thick plastic sheets."

The Rapida 105 will allow the company to print board up to 1.2mm (48pt) thick and micro-flute with a maximum caliper of 1.6mm (64pt).

In addition, for greater reliability, an automated, height-adjustable, non-stop roller in the delivery is inserted in the direction of sheet travel, which is designed to help prevent missing sheet stoppages. For pressroom efficiency, changing the coating blanket and cleaning the coater are no longer the time-consuming tasks they used to be. Changing the coating plates on Rapida presses is fully automated.

About choosing KBA to fulfill this press application, Steve Lobis, vice president and general manager, said, "This is our first KBA press - and we're very excited to be installing it. We found that KBA has a large, loyal following of customers, which impressed us, and only they were able to produce a proven, custom press to our specifications."

Ben Smith, plant manager, added: "We chose KBA after thoroughly researching the press manufacturer market for nine months. It's true that this press will set us apart from the majority of our competitors due to its speed and automation. Beyond that, however, most manufacturers tend to regard packaging presses as a sideline, whereas for KBA, this has been a primary market for many decades."

Randy Perkins, sales manager for KBA, noted that KBA has long served the highly-automated packaging sector with sheetfed offset technology, and not necessarily limited to large format.

"Fully 50 percent of the Rapida 105 medium-format presses that leave the production line at the Radebeul facility are destined for packaging or folding carton production," said Perkins. "The reasons range from the wide range of substrates the Rapidas can handle to KBA's well-known quality and durability and its ability to create customized configurations to best suit customers' specific needs."
